In memory of U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Daniel Hansen

The Hero

U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Daniel Hansen died Feb. 14, 2009, in Farah Province, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device he was working on detonated.

Hansen is survived by his mother, Sheryll; father, Delbert; younger sister, Katie; and twin brother, Matthew (also a Marine). "He strived to be the best in everything,” said Matthew Hansen, his brother. “He just had such a passion for everything he did. He truly was the embodiment of the Marine Corps ethos: honor, courage and commitment.” 

Hansen, 24, joined the Marines just days high school graduation. He and Matthew left for boot camp in San Diego one week apart, with Daniel heading off first. His military ties ran deep. His father was in the Army, as is a younger sister. Both of his grandfathers served in the military and his mother, Sheryll, worked in a military shipyard.

Workout Notes

  • The kettlebell swings can also be completed with your ruck, holding it by the top handle, or with a dumbbell by holding it with both hands clasped under a bell.
  • The burpees can be completed with or without a push-up.
  • The sit-ups were originally designed as GHD situps, and if you have a GHD apparatus available, use it.

Modifications

  • If you are Life or Forward, you may complete 15 kettlebell swings, 15 burpees, and 15 sit-ups for a minimum of 5 rounds.
